SMS Giveaway Day - December 2, 2009

Yeh....it's here again....SMS Giveaway Day!! It's so much fun that I had to participate again!!! My little offering is an Aunt Grace Scrapbag Charm Pack. I am happy to ship internationally - I will draw a random number on December 6th 6pm EST. All I ask is that in your comments you tell me about the best pattern you know of for toddler pajamas (my little one is under 2)....I just ordered the Oliver + S Bedtime Story Pajamas this week....or I'd love to hear of your ideas on the best toy patterns (Melly & Me perhaps??) My little girl loves her stuffed animals so I thought it might be fun to make her one so that she has it for the future...handmade is the best right!!:)

Thank you for stopping by my little corner of blogland:)

  8. Hi there, I'm new to sewing so this little charm pack would be great to help build my stash. As for toddler pants, I don't know any good patterns, but have seen people on the web take apart one pair of pants and use that as a pattern. So maybe if your toddler has a favorite pair of pants you could use that as a pattern to make more?

    ReplyDelete
  9. hi -- I haven't made any pants for toddlers, but in general I find that the easiest way is to trace a pair that she's got (adding some room for growth). There is a good demo in Creative Family.

  11. I love patterns from Kwik Sew, especially the footed pyjamas, great for this time of year (especially as keeping socks on a two-year-old is almost impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Perhaps an oversize T-shirt with some applique or rick rack? Maybe some of the trim could match the toy! 8^)

    ReplyDelete
  13. My kids tell me their O+S pj's are their favourites, and they LOVE their Melly & Me softies - we have a Blossom and a Dilbert. Also my niece has several Acutes' lol

  14. I don't know of any good patterns, but there are probably a few freebie tutorials out there somewhere. Thanks for the chance!

  15. I haven't had time to make many toys for my little ones, but found that it doesn't take much to please them. I tend to do the more waldorfy toys which doesn't take much of a pattern. Thanks for the giveaway!

  16. I'll have to point you to fellow blogger Annie, whose shop you can find here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/birdandlittlebird. Her Rabbit and Fox teddys are just super sweet. I got the pattern from her and being a newbie to sewing was able to complete it in one afternoon. Any little girl will love it, I can tell you it's become a hit of a birthday present. Thanks for the giveaway, it is very generous of you!

  17. in the past, i have tried to just sew based on a pair of pants he/she already has.

  19. the only pattern i've tried is the komono pjs from Amy Butler's book little stitches - I'm part way through making a set for my daughter and it seems to be working out so far

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have not made any pjs or toys for my kids just quilts. I did crochet a stuffed animal for my cousin years ago that was a lot of fun.

  21. A good friend of mine designed a great layette pattern that she's currently finishing the testing phase for toddler sizes, so it should be out shortly. The testers, from what I understand, have been thrilled. Here's her site with the layette: http://hyenacart.com/FishsticksDesigns/index.php?c=0&p=14877

  22. Thanks for the giveaway!

For Pj's I just go to Walmart and buy an easy looking pj pattern, usually mcalls. I like simple and easy and have made quite a few. I go to Walmart because it is the cheepest.

As for toys, I have never made any before, I have two autistic boys and they have never been into stuff animals. Good luck on finding one though.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Jammies I just use a regular pants pattern with out the frills and a fold over elastic waist.
I'm making black apple dolls for the little girls in the family for XMAS. They are adorable and easy!

  31. oh, my pj days are far behind me, but for years, I used the multi-sized patterns in my Sewing for Todders book by Kwik Sew, adapting the sweat pants and sweatsuit patterns. Thanks for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well it's not designer or anything, but I've made Simplicity 3987 several times for my little boy. The latest pair was last week! There are pics of his jammies on my Flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tawnybee/ (Dino Jammies or Rocket Jammies or Froggie Jammies are all made with this pattern)

  33. I haven't made any shirts yet, they seem more intimidating than pants for some reason, but I have made my toddler some pants with old t-shirts of mine for comfy pj pants, I just laid out a pair of her pants that I like the fit of to make the pattern, adding seam allowance. I also have not made any toys from patterns, but I've made a couple of cute rag dolls from a pattern I made freehand.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love the Oliver patterns too! However, I think the best PJ pattern I have used yet is the one I made myself using old PJ's as a guide!

    Thanks for taking part!

    ReplyDelete
  35. For pj's I just trace a pair that my kid already has and use that as a template. But for softies, I recommend the stuffed elephant in the book 'Last Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts' by Joelle Hoverson. In fact, I just made one for this giveaway that you can see here at my blog.

  40. Great giveaway! I'm not yet a mother so I haven't had the pleasure of making toddler anything yet (but I am looking forward to because they all look so darn cute!).. I have seen a lot of tutorials around for them and I recommend you checking out sewing.craftgossip.com, there is always tons and tons of great tutorials on there!

  41. I've never seen this line of fabric, but would like to see it up close and in person...

    ReplyDelete
  42. My favorite toy pattern is, unfortunately, out of print, it is for a doll that my mom made for me but part of the pattern has since gone missing. As for pj's I just drew up my own pattern from stuff that fits my son & used some of dad's old t-shirts.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I haven't made any pjs but i got a pattern called britches and bloomers that I'm sure you could make the bottoms as pjs. Super easy and great directions.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I am sorry to say that I know nothing about sewing for toddlers, as I don't have any kids yet. But if I can still have a chance I would love it!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm planning on trying the ones from the Make Baby Stuff website, because I'm lazy and they look easy.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  48. I don't have kids, so I don't know a lot of patterns. As for toys my favorite are little monster bears - made of scraps and old clothes. They have to have extra legs, arms in wrong places and eyes on the fingers :) Love them ;)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't know about pjs, but Larissa has a great (free) stuffed monkey pattern on her blog (http://mmmcrafts.blogspot.com/) that I've made and it turned out wonderfully! She also sells other patterns she designed in her shop and I highly recommend her - she's super-nice to boot!

BTW, I am also in Ontario :D

    ReplyDelete
  50. My favorite pattern is just a very long tshirt. Short sleeve and knee length for summer. Long sleeves and ankle length for winter. The Kwik Sew pattern books and individual patterns are great!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love everything at wee wonderfuls as far as childeren's toys goes. There is a great elephant softie published in "last minute quilted and patchwork gifts" Great give away :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I've never made clothes...but I've drafted my own pattern for an owl (http://www.haveyoumetus.net/michelle/blog/?p=83), which wasn't too difficult. And I've made a Scotty doggie, which also was not difficult, except for the set-in seams (http://www.haveyoumetus.net/michelle/blog/?p=90). I like not buying patterns if I can figure something out on my own! I kinda want to make another owl, and use Texture Magic for the back, I think that would be super cute!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I haven't ever made pjs that little before, so I don't know about a pattern. But, I'd love to enter your giveaway.

  54. I don't use a pattern but I do use this basic tutorial (I guess you could adapt it to a true toddler, my girl is 4). The best part is the vintage pillowcase (and for adults you use vintage sheets), since it's already soft and you can find the best best prints at a thrift store.

  62. I ordered the same pattern to use for flannels and hope to get them done for Christmas. I make a lot of knit PJs using the kwik sew patterns for the basic PJS that are knit pants with ribbing cuffs & LS top with ribbing at neck/sleeves. I really like their patterns for basics.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I just get pj patterns at Joann's. I've never gotten any fancy ones. I usually just make flannel pj pants, but a white t-shirt to go with it and embellish it to match the pants.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I haven't made any PJs or toys for my daughter yet so I'm interested to read all these comments. I've been thinking about getting the Oliver+ S pajama pattern for a while now.

    ReplyDelete

It was my first time making one and I enjoyed every step. Thanks for the chance.

Thanks for the giveaway! Be blessed!

  74. It's funny that you are looking for stuffed toys and pjs. It seems like a lot of the quilt designers are coming out with them lately. I really though that the Eloise & Elmore Toy Pattern by Indygo Junction was super cute. It's Elephants!

  75. There is a really cute pattern for little boys pants that could easily be pajama bottoms in Heather Ross' Weekend Sewing. Also, I made a really cute mermaid doll for my little cousin out of felt when she was just one. I didn't use a pattern from a book but made one up, it's not as hard as it might sound.

    ReplyDelete

  97. The best pattern for pj's for a toddler, I found, was a pattern taken off a pair they already have or off a pair of sweatpants and top they may have. anything easy to get on and off and that they may be able to help with themselves when getting ready for bed!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I have also used a pair of their pants for a pattern already and found this to be pretty accurate. The rear end could have used a little more room but other than that, they were good!

  114. Hmm, I have yet to make pj's for my little ones, though that is on the list to get done before Christmas. I just picked up a Simplicity pattern to try out. 115. Thanks for the chance to win a cute charm pack and what a great way to get pattern suggestions. My little guys just turned 1 and I haven't yet made them any clothing (I've been thinking about making some pants out of my husband's old t-shirts). I have made them the elephant from last minute patchwork and quilted gifts. The elephants are adorable and quick. I chose to leave off the blankets but other than that I followed the directions and had two new toys for my boys in about 4 hours (two nights work after they went to bed).

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  126. I've just used good old Butterrick pj patterns. Though I have no little ones...mine are 14 and 17, but I'm still planning on making some pj bottoms for them both this XMAS.

  127. Hello there!
I have made a few pajamas recently by simply making a raglan style top and simple pants. If you like come take a look here. No professional pattern needed.

  128. The only pajamas I've made for my boys are the Huck Finn Pants in Weekend Sewing. I have not yet attempted toys, I'm sorry.

  129. MAde numerous flannel nighties for both son and daughter years ago. Loved the accessability to change diapers with the draw string hem to enclose their little feet before they were swaddled. Think it was a butterick or McCalls pattern adn now those sleepers are my PGD#1 dollies nighties.

  132. I always just use a pair of pants that fit to make a pattern for pj pants. And use hanes t-shirts for tops. Thanks for the giveaway!

  134. The Oliver+S ones Are really cute! However, as a single mommy I can't really afford to buy patterns. I have found a ton of good ideas online at Sew What's New website .The Burda website is also good! Thanks for such a GREAT giveaway!!

    ReplyDelete
  135. Tracing ones that already fit :) I'm not much help, I know!

    ReplyDelete
  136. I wish I could help you on your pjs but my daughters are grown up and it's been ages since I have made them nighties. Guess I'll have to wait for grandchildren!!

    Thanks for the give away!

  137. You've already ordered my favorite toddler pajama pattern :-) They were a big hit with my niece last year! Thanks so much for the giveaway!

  138. I only have one 13 year old daughter, and I never have made pajamas or stuffed animals for her, so I can't help you with any suggestions. I do like your giveaway fabric line!

    ReplyDelete
  139. I usually just wait until patterns go on sale for $1 at the local craft stores and then I alter them to my taste

    ReplyDelete
  140. I have yet to make PJ's for my 12 month old. So far just a skirt from a pattern and several dresses refashioned from shirts. So I am now looking through all these comments to help me too. Thanks for asking such a great question!

    ReplyDelete
  141. I've never made jammies for my kids. I considered it, but figured that if the relied on me for jammies, they have to sleep naked!! I did get a Melly and Me pattern to make them some dolls for Christmas. I hope it happens!

    ReplyDelete
  142. Hi, thank you for joining the give-away :)

I helped my mom with a pair of PJ's for a friend of hers about a year ago and the little girl loved them, she wouldn't take them off for a week I think. I'm not 100% sure where she got the pattern, I think it was from a very old magazine though, but it kinda looked like Yasmine's outfit from Aladin with a poofy pair of shorts and sleeves. She looked adorable :)
And I'm designing my own line of stuffed animals right now, right now I've got a ragdoll, a dog, a cat and a bunny waiting to be turned into PDF-files.

  143. This isn't of much help to you, but the best toddler pyjamas pattern I know is in a Danish sewing book names Børnetøj 0-3 by two ladies (maybe mother - daughter) named Meedom.
The book has the best, simple instructions and relatively basic patterns, but the fit is the best I've some across and they leave much room for making patterns your own :)

    ReplyDelete
  144. I can't help with the pyjamas, but I CAN with the toys. How about a bird mobile? Check this one out: http://morepjs.blogspot.com/2009/10/scrappy-little-bird-mobile.html. It looks really easy and cute!!

Thanks for the chance to win :-)

  145. I just made pajamas for my little ones. They hate the way they fit. I have had to adjust them and well... long story short...
I don't have any suggestions for a good pajama pattern and have been writing down a few I have read here to make more.
Thanks for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  146. You made a great choice for the pj's pattern. Sorry I can't help with the toy pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Hmmm...I can't help you with that one. I've only made pjs with Simplicity patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I've never made pjs but have been admiring the Fishsticks pattern. I do make lots of pants for my little one out of T-shirts - just google T-shirt pants for lots of suggestions. Although I love sewing, I find that there are so many used clothes in good shape out there that I tend to just clothe my family that way. Sacrilege, I know. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  149. The jammies look good to me. I am a garage sale junkie...My sewing time goes to quilting.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I've heard good things about that pattern. I've just been using some vintage Simplicity and McCall's for the past 7 years. I've been very fortunate to have little girls that love nightgowns. I love the princess top gathered elastic look- mostly because it is 3 pieces and fast.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I don't know much about toddler pjs (yet), but I do know and love a little book called "Toys to Sew" by Clair Garland. Here it is: http://www.amazon.com/Toys-Sew-Patterns-Animals-Accessories/dp/0307345416/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1259856548&sr=8-1
I love the elephant and the doll :D

  152. My daughter loves her black apple doll. She is two and she must have it wherever she goes. I made her to look like my daughter so my daughter calls her meeeeee.

    ReplyDelete
  153. I've never made pajamas, but I recently made felt play food for my 3 year old daughter - an entire Christmas turkey dinner with desserts - I'll put these in a picnic basket for her to open Christmas morning. I did it without a pattern and it was pretty easy.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I rather like the habitual simple kimono, but that only covers the top bit. :)

    ReplyDelete
  155. I have never used any patterns to make anything, and no experience yet with sewing for kids... BUT I have been making my puppy some stuffed toys out of felt and embriodering on them! They need to be safe like kids' toys :)

    ReplyDelete
  156. Hey! I would try Lotta's book, "Simple Sewing for Babies." It's a great book and has some really cute toy and jammie patterns!

    ReplyDelete
  157. I want the Melly and Me giraff pattern in a bad way! I also made a fabric doll from a pattern in a magazine 25 years ago that is calling my name to make again for my granddaughter if I can just find that pattern....

    ReplyDelete
  158. Great giveaway question! The only pajama pattern I have used for toddler is the Oliver + S one and I loved it. Really easy to use and super cute on.

As for toy patterns I have always loved the look of the ones from Wee Wonderfuls.

    thanks for sharing

  165. I want to know best pj pattern too! got some fabric the other day I want to use for my guy for pjs. So far, the toys I've made my boys have been out of my head. I do have one of the Big 3 patterns for a teddy that I've done a few times, though, can't recall the number.

    ReplyDelete
  169. love aunt grace fabrics! thanks for the opportunity to enter your awesome giveaway!
i'm not a sewer - rather a quilter - and have made neither toddler pajamas nor stuffed animals. but a fun idea might be: as most kids have something they like to draw over and over again (an imaginary friend, a six-legged cat... when my boyfriend was little he always drew himself as an elephant...etc.), you could make a stuffed animal from the child's drawing (either your own version of it in a more complicated pattern, or even scanning the character and printing him on printer fabric).
    cheers

  180. Normally, I use the patterns of ottobre, in this case shirt and leggins as pyjama for my 16 month old son. This is a magazine from Finland (also available in English) which is issued 4 times the year and has plenty of patterns especially for girls of different ages but also for boys :)

You can see some pictures on there blog if you mind (just look for ottobre design and blogspot).

  181. Have not made PJs for the grand daughters yet, Nana make the Princess dresses for them. As for toys, I love the old favorite of Raggedy Ann and Andy, I also make sleeping babies that look so real laying on the bed. ladycolmn@aol.com

  182. I don't have children so haven't much experience in making children's items beyond bibs and blankets. But I have made stuffies for a friend's girls without a pattern, just by playing around:
    http://kleiosbelly.wordpress.com/2009/04/01/monster-mania/

And made this stuffed Lowly Worm for my little nephew, again without a pattern:
    http://kleiosbelly.wordpress.com/2009/08/24/ring-a-ding-ding/

I've also seen folks make stuffies based on pictures drawn by their kids, which I think is a cute idea.

  183. The book "Weekend Sewing" by Heather Ross has some PJ pants in it that I'm (maybe) going to try to make for my daughter and husband. It's a lovely book - I highly recommend it.

  198. Sew generous-- thanks for including my entry in the giveaway! I don't tend to use patterns, and I'm not a clothes sewer. I do quite often make stuffies. For those I knida see what people have done to get ideas and then go from there. I like to make them outta work socks, I've done a few monkeys, bunnies and a hedgehog.
